Tsunami
While the tsunami in Toyama would not be as large as the one caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, it is predicted to arrive very quickly. (Based on simulations)
Characteristics of Tsunami in Toyama
1. As early as 1 to 2 minutes from earthquake occurrence to tsunami arrival
2. The tallest tsunami would be 2.3m (8 ft.) - 7.1m (23 ft.) in Namerikawa City, much smaller than ocean tsunami like the one that followed the Great East Japan Earthquake
*For Namerikawa, the largest tsunami will be the first wave (quickly becoming smaller from the second wave), with duration of approximately 3 minutes.
3. Flooding of over 5m (16 ft.) deep will be confined to within about 10m (33 ft.) from the coast
Action Guide
- If you feel a strong earthquake - or even a smaller earthquake if the shaking lasts for a long time - quickly evacuate to a safe place such as higher ground or the upper levels of a reinforced concrete building.
- Even if you did not feel the earthquake, if there is a tsunami warning, quickly move away from the sea and head to a safe place.
- Tsunami can strike again and again, so do not let your guard down until the tsunami warning or advisory has been lifted.
